Improve Conservation Finance

We are members of a growing community of conservation finance practitioners in the United States and around the world.

We believe that solutions need to be applied at an increasingly large scale to meet the conservation and sustainable development challenges of the 21st century. We are researching innovative finance mechanisms for funding land protection and applying them in ways that will conserve more land more effectively.

Our partners include James N. Levitt, director of the Program on Conservation Innovation at the Harvard Forest, which is developing new tools to increase resources available for land protection. Initiatives include:

  • Coordinating the "Financing Forest Conservation" Study Group and Advisory Board, in conjunction with legislation signed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in January 2009
  • Preparing a report for the Massachusetts Environmental Trust on two innovative methods for financing forest conservation in Massachusetts (i.e., Aggregation for Forest Conservation, and Mitigation for Forest Conservation
